But not everyone watching had their eyes solely on Tatsuya. In fact, most of the audience was watching Leo, who had shown off a never-before-seen armament, and in a flashy battle to boot.
And though they were few, some in the crowd were paying attention to Mikihiko as well, as he accurately used Clairvoyance to see the 512-character code from a distance. Not all of them were ignorant of the mechanism behind Clairvoyance; one of them, in fact, was a childhood friend who knew all about it.
âCome on, Miki⦠Youâre doing it just like you used to!â
âHuh? Whatâs he doing âjust like he used toâ?â Mizuki asked Erika. Sheâd been muttering something to herself intently.
Erika gave her a vague answer as her mind sunk deeper into her own world. She understood what Mikihiko had just done. Her relationship with him was deeper than she let on, and frankly, deeper than she told herself it was.
Sense Synchronization was by no means a simple technique, but back before the accident, the âboy geniusâ Mikihiko could do it as easily as breathing. But ever since the accident, heâd never been able to use magic this smoothly.
Huh⦠His scars have already healed. Sometimes she would hear sentimental lines like âPhysical wounds heal, but mental ones never do,â but in real life there were physical wounds that would heal and ones that wouldnât. So in the same way, there should be some mental scars that didnât heal and some that did.
Mikiâ¦do you see it? Youâre using magic today the same way you used to.
Erika didnât have the ability to distinguish spirits. Her eyes couldnât see them. So she couldnât be completely sure if spirit magic worked or not, but she was a daughter of the Chiba, so she had very well-polished personal combat skills instead.
To a certain extent, she could tell just from a personâs tiny gestures, eye movements, and changes in expression when a person used magic, what they used it on, and whether it succeeded or failed.
Her eyes as a daughter of the Chiba, the âeyes of the swordsman,â perceived that Mikihikoâs magic had gone off the way heâd wanted it to.
Seriously, this is getting on my nerves⦠Why donât you see it? Youâre already back on your feet.
Right now, Mikihikoâs strength had returned, but his confidence hadnât. His casual expression was something she understood, and she understood it because of all the experiences they had shared since they were children, when they were forced together and followed each other around.
Now, all he had to do was get his confidence back. He just had to believe in himselfâ¦
ââ¦Erika? Whatâs wrong? Erika!â
âHuh? What?â
âDonât âhuh, whatâ me. Whatâs wrong? You suddenly got lost in thought. Are you worried about something?â
âHuh? Oh, well, yeah, I guess I am a little. That match was really close just now, you know? I was wondering if theyâll be okay in the next one,â she said, giving a spur-of-the-moment excuse.
Mizuki meekly let herself be fooled, saying things like ânow that you mention itâ and âIâm sure theyâll be fineâ and âWe just have to cheer them on.
